Some of what we love to do!
Patients with Special Needs
Providing quality dental care for young and apprehensive patients and patients with special needs is what put us on the map 46 years ago. It was a time when these patients had few options for treatment aside from general anesthesia and sedation, which is NOT usually necessary. Many parents are not aware that there are other options for treatment and that there are also potential risks involved with sedation and anesthesia. We understand that parents want to avoid these risks as well as the costs of anesthesia and sedation and still receive quality dental care for their children. Our practice focuses on providing extra time and attention to work with each patient and their specific needs. We see patients with ADHD, ADD, Autism, Down's Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Intellectual Disabilities, Dental Phobia, children needing extra attention, and a variety of different special needs, all without the need for general anesthesia or sedation.
We do offer Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) for children and adults who are apprehensive. Nitrous Oxide, or better known as laughing gas, is a mild form of sedation for children and other patients who may be overly nervous or anxious during dental procedures. Nitrous Oxide helps patients relax during their visit, and receive dental treatment in a comfortable and safe manner. Typically delivered through a scented “nose”, nitrous oxide is mixed directly with oxygen and delivered as the patient breathes in and out and is effective within minutes. Patients will smell a faint sweet aroma and experience a sense of well-being and relaxation. Since it may produce a feeling of giddiness or euphoria, it is often called “laughing gas”. Children sometimes say they feel “floaty” and their arms and legs may feel “tingly”. Nitrous Oxide also raises the pain threshold and may even make the time appear to pass quickly. Patients remain awake and will be able to interact and communicate. Nitrous Oxide is safe to use during treatment and is eliminated from the body quickly. There are no lingering effects.

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)
We are excited to announce that Dentistry for Children & Adults Too! offers a treatment to manage cavities for children and patients with special needs. Nobody looks forward to having a cavity drilled and filled by a dentist, but now there’s an alternative! A liquid that can be brushed on cavities to stop tooth decay painlessly with no injections, no drills, and is less expensive than fillings.
Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is a non-invasive FDA-approved cavity fighting liquid medication that can be used to halt the progression of cavities. Originally approved by the FDA for tooth sensitivity, (SDF) is also useful for the treatment of tooth decay. Silver Diamine Fluoride is composed of two primary components, silver and fluoride. Silver acts as an anti-microbial agent that kills the bacteria that causes tooth decay and simultaneously strengthens your teeth. Fluoride is the active ingredient that helps prevent additional decay from appearing. While the ideal way to treat teeth with decay is by removing the decay and placing a restoration, this alternative treatment allows us to stop decay with a noninvasive method. This is particularly useful with young children and children with special needs. Treatment with SDF may not eliminate the need for restorative dentistry to repair function or aesthetics, but has been effective at prevention of further decay. According to the Center for Disease Control almost 20% of children aged 2-19 have untreated cavities. Children who are on the younger end of that spectrum may not be mature enough to handle routine restorative dental care.
Silver Diamine Fluoride treatment is a simple process and is applied to the teeth with a brush. The application takes only minutes. There is no noise, drilling, or numbing. This makes it an excellent choice for very small or anxious children and patients with special needs.
The tooth will be cleaned and dried
Using a micro brush, we apply a small amount of 38% Silver Diamine Fluoride to any teeth with visible cavities
A second application may increase the efficacy of the treatment.
These procedures may be followed up with a home fluoride rinse.
Using Silver Diamine Fluoride to treat tooth decay will result in a dark discoloration of the decayed area whether it was previously visible or not. Healthy tooth surfaces remain unchanged, but the tooth decay will turn very dark after application. In some cases, we can use SDF when children are very young, and then focus on restoring the teeth with more conventional treatment when children are older and better able to tolerate procedures. The use of SDF may also be used to buy time for some patients who have baby teeth that will be lost avoiding the need for fillings and sparing the patient more invasive dental treatment while still protecting the teeth from harmful bacteria. The use of SDF does not eliminate the need for dental fillings or crowns in order to restore function or appearance.
At Dentistry for Children & Adults Too! we advocate prevention! The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that each child should have their first dental visit by his/her first birthday or with the appearance of a child’s first tooth. With visits to the dentist at regular intervals beginning at this age we can establish trust and teach a child that visits to the dentist are not only fun, but also provide proper preventive care and dental education which are the key to a lifetime of positive dental experiences. Keeping smiles healthy and beautiful, it’s what we do!
Adult Dentistry
We see adults too! And if you are very good at your appointment, Dr. Cho might give you a balloon as well! 😊 We love our adult patients as much as we love our kids. As our patients grew up, they had families of their own and brought their kids here. We’ve been around so long we’ve even seen their grandchildren! We are honored to serve our generations of families! We offer a variety of dental services for adults including cleanings, restorative fillings, crowns, cosmetic dentistry/teeth whitening, and more. Dental Sealants
Dental Sealants
Preventing tooth decay can become even easier. You may already be aware that daily brushing and flossing are the most important weapons against the formation of plaque, the primary cause of cavities. In addition to your regular routine of brushing and flossing, we can apply a coat of plastic material – called a sealant – on the top
or biting surfaces of your back teeth. This plastic coating creates a barrier on your teeth and seals out the decay-causing bacteria that live in plaque.
How can sealants help prevent cavities?
Applying a thin plastic coating to your teeth makes it harder for the plaque to stick to the tiny groves on the biting surfaces of the back teeth - protecting the tooth surface and reducing the risk of forming cavities. Sealants are very important to protect children’s permanent teeth in the cavity prone years.
Is it a difficult procedure?
Sealant placement is simple and painless. Most often, sealants will last for several years. At regular check-up visits we will check to see that sealants are still in place.
Does Insurance cover sealants?
Many insurances cover sealants, however there may be age limitations and every plan will vary. I will present a treatment plan with the procedure codes for the sealants and on which teeth that they will be applied should you wish to contact your insurance to determine your benefits. Whether your insurance plan covers sealants or not, I still recommend sealants to protect your children’s permanent teeth through the cavity prone years.
